How did you get into bodybuilding?
I grew up on a dairy farm and had to do a lot of chores that required physical exercise (milking cows, unloading hay, cleaning pens, picking rocks out of fields, etc.) I was also involved in high-school sports: Basketball, Volleyball, and Softball. I was not involved in college sports when I attended Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. Because I did not have the chores anymore and I wasn’t involved in sports, I started to exercise to stay fit. I went to the gym where the football players worked out in and just did the Nautilus machines because that was all I knew what to do at that time. Once I started to know people there, I asked a guy that was in my classes advice on lifting free weights. He told me he didn’t have time to train me, but if I worked out with him I would pick it up from there. After him seeing that I was naturally strong and how motivated I was, he said I should try doing a bodybuilding competition. 5 months after I started lifting, I entered my first ANBC Bodybuilding Competition.

Which contest has been your biggest success; which has had the most meaning to you?
2001 NPC Nationals was my biggest success, for that was when I received my IFBB Pro Card. The 2002 Jan Tana was the most meaningful for me, because that was my Pro Debut and winning my weight class sent me to the Ms. Olympia 8 weeks later.

Please tell me something about your training routine
Right now I lift one body part per day
Monday : Shoulders
Tuesday: Legs,
Wednesday: Back
Thursday: Chest
Friday: Arms
I alternate doing abs and calves each of those five days.

60 minutes of walking for my fat burning cardio right now 5-6 times a week and then high-intensity cardio for 20-30 minutes 3 x per week.

What is your favorite exercise in the gym and which one is the one you don’t like so much?
My favorite exercise would be some kind of back exercise, like bent over rows or lat pulldown. For some reason, my back is naturally strong and I can really use that “Mind-Muscle” contraction people talk about when training. My least favorite exercise would have to be calf exercises…. Probably because I train them at the end of my workout and I am usually spent by the time I train them. Also they burn like hell when I train them.

Which body part is your best in your opinion?
I used to be, and still am somewhat, but I think my best asset is…… my ass! At least that is what I am complimented on all the time, and asked how I got it so firm. I have to attribute it to the chores I used to have to do growing up on a dairy farm. I had to milk cows… 60 cows 2 x day, which requires squating… and lots of it….probably from age 10-18. Sounds kind of funny, I am sure, but it is the honest to God truth.

What do you enjoy about training for competition… what do you enjoy about the ‘off season’?
I enjoy the way my body looks the closer I get to a competition. I also enjoy putting routines together for the evening show. I like having different themes & looks for each competition. For example, I’ve had a “Country-Girl” routine, “Terminator 3” routine, and a “Disco” routine…. All of which I loved performing! I enjoy the ‘off season’ for all the other things in my life, besides bodybuilding, that I love (ie: doing landscaping and gardening, riding bike, playing tennis, water-skiing, & spending time with my family in the country).

Please describe a typical day in the life of Beth Roberts.
At the present moment I am working full time 7:00a.m.-4:00p.m. Then I head to they gym and usually tan before I lift. I try to limit my lifting to 1 hour (5:00-6:00). Then I usually walk after I lift or do my high intensity cardio. Then I head home, shower, & eat supper. After that, I prepare for my next day for eating and clothes to wear to the gym. I’ve always been a sucker for wearing something cool to workout in J

Please tell me about what you do when you don’t work out (hobbies, what do you do to relax?)
I like to do so many things other than bodybuilding…. Such as: Bike riding, water-skiing, tennis, volleyball, gardening/landscaping, hanging out with friends & going dancing. To relax, I like to read inspirational/spiritual books, yoga, watch movies, & lay out in the sun.
